Colin Scotts grew up in Sydney and his skill at rugby led him to be the first Australian to win a football scholarship in the United States. He then became the first and only Australian to be drafted into the American National Football League (NFL). After a successful ten year gridiron career he retired and became a WWF pro-wrestler.

Colin returned to Australia for the Sydney Olympics and has written a book called “All Balls” (Pan McMillan) about his NFL experience. Colin has kept up his fitness and is a great advertisement for physical activity as part of the Healthy Active Ambassador program.

Message from Colin Scotts

Growing up in Sydney, I always dreamed of making it big in the world of football. My chance came when I was the first Australian to be drafted into the NFL, winning a scholarship to play football in America.

Colin Scotts encouraging Kids to be activePlaying Gridiron among the big leagues in America was one of the most unforgettable adventures of my life. After an injury prevented me from playing football anymore I then took on the world as a WWF pro-wrestler. My time in America taught me many things about myself and about life.

Today I am happy to be a Healthy Active Ambassador, joining the Australian Government’s fight against childhood obesity. You see, this is a problem that we all need to take seriously. Did you know that almost one quarter of all Aussie kids are overweight or obese?

When I came back home to Australia, it was during the time of the 2000 Olympics, I was inspired by the passion and drive that Australians showed the world.

Colin Scotts talking to kids about being healthyI wish we could apply this same passion and drive to tackling the overweight and obesity problem that’s plaguing our country. I know sometimes it’s easier to just sit in front of the computer and play video games, or watch TV. But kids shouldn’t spend more than two hours a day doing these things. You need to have at least an hour of physical activity a day. When you think about it, that’s not much at all! That’s about as long as a TV show.

Colin Scotts encouraging Kids to be activeI challenge you to get out there and get moving! Start by taking small steps everyday. You don’t have to play football or be an international athlete – but being more physically active can help you live a long, healthy and happy life. Together we can do this. Come on Australia!
