Greg Inglis grew up in NSW where he played rugby league for the Bowraville Tigers. He now plays for the Melbourne Storm in the NRL competition. Greg has also played for Queensland in the 2006 State of Origin and has represented Australia in the Tri Nations tournament.

Greg is a great example of how good food and lots of activity can help achieve great results. At such a young age for a rugby player Greg is an excellent ambassador for healthy lifestyles and physical activity.

Message from Greg Inglis

I’ve been playing rugby league since I was a kid. It’s what I love to do more than anything. The Melbourne Storm signed me up when I was just 15 and I scored a total of six tries in my first two games.

I’ve won my share of battles on the playing field. But now, as a Healthy Active Ambassador, I’ve just joined an even bigger battle – helping Australia win the fight against overweight and obesity.

We have always been world leaders in sport but now, sadly, we are also becoming world leaders in being fat. Did you know that about 1.5 million young people under the age of 18 are either overweight or obese? And at the rate we’re going, the problem will keep getting worse.

First, try to have at least an hour of physical activity in your day. That’s not too hard, is it? You could play a fun game with your mates in the park, take up a sport or martial art or even just ride your bike to school. Being active makes your muscles and bones stronger – like mine! Being active is also a great way to make new friends and have fun at the same time.

Make sure you drink lots of water, too. Physical activity makes you lose water when you sweat, so keeping hydrated is very important.

The other thing to remember is to eat healthy food. That means less junk food like lollies and biscuits. I know I like to have chips and pizza sometimes – and it’s OK to have it once in a while, but not all the time or you could become overweight or obese.

If you don’t believe me, ask my mum! She’s the one who always made sure I ate my veggies! Thanks to her, I’ve grown up to be big and strong and made my dream of being a Rugby League player come true.

Rugby League is one of the toughest competitive sports out there. That’s why I train and keep myself physically active to keep scoring tries for my team. It’s part of my job!

So make it your job, too – join me in helping beat this overweight and obesity problem in Australia. Every body can!
